Being Buddies Educational Activities Described Below

            Being Buddies Overview:

Being Buddies sessions, originally for grades Pre K-3, (OLDER students now get digital opportunities) include a variety of Social/ Emotional Learning activities.  Miss Cami’s short stories about Thob and Thobina are central to each theme-based session.  Her invisible twins practice Being Buddies with their new animal classmates: Tiger, Monkey, Giraffe, Dog and others.  Students engage in reading, writing, role-plays and group discussions to foster new thoughts about getting along.  Simple arts and dramatic projects keep children curious and thinking about Being Buddies ideas.  Multiple sessions provide opportunities for children to engage in all of the following activities:

  • THEME DISCUSSIONS focus on Confidence, Respect, Empathy & more
  • BOOK READINGS are by local self published author/illustrator
  • MOTION/EMOTION dance breaks are based on characters’ styles
  • STORYBOARD dialogue bubbles are for scripting for the role plays
  • PROPS made for story characters are paper & stick puppets & masks
  • DRAMATIZATIONS are based on the theme, story, scripts and props
  • POSTER development is based on theme vocabulary and characters
  • TECHNOLOGY projects use slideshow, video, text & drawing programs
  • MAGNETIC and sticker die cut characters to manipulate for Sept 2017

Excitement, repetition of new words and a variety of interwoven projects will increase a child’s recall of Being Buddies themes and skills.  It’s helpful to practice dealing with bullies and other tricky situations through role-plays.  Research demonstrates that role-plays are effective for increasing understanding and empathy, while decreasing bullying.

Very little characters...but the passion that children give to their voices is larger than life.

BAKING SODA PASTE can rinse away all the words that students write in the word bubbles on the large classroom posters. Once laminated, posters can be written on using any permanent marker (without the smell of the easily wiped off smeary kind)

BEING BUDDIES 101: A Residency
Introducing Being Buddies with Thob and Thobina
An Arts Based, Pre K-5 Anti-Bullying, Pro Literacy & Technology Project

Being Buddies 101, a weeklong elementary school event, inspires confidence, respect and empathy while fostering skills in literacy and technology.  Cami Johnson of Empathy for Kids LLC incorporates 2016 recommendations by the Office of Juvenile Justice and StopBullying.gov throughout lessons and sessions.  Being Buddies provides an easy to implement, interdisciplinary, interactive method for teaching cultural expectations and age appropriate strategies for “being more than a bystander to bullying.”  Opportunities for critical thinking and practicing skills occur throughout the week residency which ends with a variety of dramatizations and presentations for peers (and parents).

Classes come alive, powered by imagination.  The invisible Thob and Thobina, depicted by gesturing hats, mittens and boots, promote kindness and inclusion by suggestion and example.  Each story-based lesson revolves around a Thobin twin learning to understand in which ways the animals they get to know are both similar and different.  After reading Being Buddies stories, group discussion and receiving writing prompts,  students create their own script dialogue for their storyboards.  Students repeatedly deal with awkward situations, including bullying.  The details and actors change because the practice necessarily involves considering the points of view of those who bully, assist, are bullied, and intervene.  Children have fun while building awareness and new skills.  Safety, self-talk, diversity, rights, responsibilities, listening and feeling words are included in story text and discussions to reinforce social skills.

Your school has access to, and also keeps a variety of materials to build community awareness.  Each school has the option of choosing standard, or custom themes, for colorful hallway and stairwell posters.  (These will be provided prior to the residency session.)  Teachers receive similar posters and students get their own black and white versions to complete.  Students get Being Buddies 101 activity booklets that include story text and illustrated storyboards to create their scripts on during the week, but there are extra word games and activities included.  An assortment of printed materials are provided for craft activities, to be determined by teacher prior to the residency to enhance student role plays and learning.  (If requested, Crayons, markers, or paints may be kept beyond the week’s project, for additional supply fees.)  Classroom choices include making stickers, magnets, magnet boards, craft and paint stick character props, cardboard stages and masks which can be used again and again or go home.  Digital options include hyper-docs for developing theme posters and storyboards, recording a variety of storyboard dramatizations and sharing.  All licensed materials may be used and replicated for future use within your school for educational purposes.  Additional activity workbooks, in paper and digital format, will be available by subscription.

Some scissors work better for the eyes than others... but the children are happy.

A pre- printed character taped to a paint stick is the easiest prop to make..... Older children don't spend the time to color characters unless there is a special paint session.
